Preparation of Nitrogen Triiodide Ammoniate, Caution Explosive

Required Materials

Equipment:

Weighing Scale
Weighing Paper
10-mL Beaker
Metal Spatula
Pasteur Pipet
Magnetic Stirring Hot Plate
Stirring Bar
Filter Paper
Meter Stick

Chemicals:

Iodine (100mg)
Ammonia (1mL concentrated)

Procedure

1. Weigh a 100 mg of iodine into a 10-mL beaker with a magnetic stirring bar.
2. Place the beaker onto a magnetic stirring hot plate inside the fume hood. (Do not heat)
3. Add 1mL of ammonia to the beaker using a Pasteur pipet.
4. Allow the mixture to stir for 5 minutes.
5. Place the liquid onto a piece of filter paper inside the fume hood. It might be best to weigh the paper down somehow.
6. Use a metal spatula to get any excess material out of the 10 ml beaker.
7. Allow the mixture to dry for 30 minutes to one hour.
8. While mixture is drying wash the beakers and stirring rods since they have a dangerous explosive drying on them.
9. When dry tap with meter stick.
